My school is off for the coming week for Easter holidays. My parents are visiting me and we are all in Lisbon. It's the first time we've ever been here. To me, it looks a little bit like Spain and a little bit not. On the similar side, meals and the daily schedule run late, and I recognize a lot of the food. Likewise, vegetarians can't eat a lot of the traditional dishes, and that feels very familiar.
I can also see the differences. The Tagus River is a vital part of the cultural and historic life, and you can see it from many parts of the city. Although Madrid is hilly, Lisbon is a San Francisco-level, where all the streets seem to be uphill. Not everyone speaks English, but when necessary I speak Spanish, they speak Portuguese, and I understand about half of it.

Mi escuela de idiomas tiene vacaciones durante la semana que viene por ser Semana Santa. Mis padres me han visitado y ahora estamos juntos en Lisboa, Portugal. Es la primera vez que visitamos este país y me parece que es un poco como España y un poco no. Por ejemplo, ell horario es largo y los productos en los supermercados son familiares. No es posible para los vegetarianos comer muchos platos tradicionales pero estoy acostumbrada a eso. Sin embargo, hay muchas diferencias entre Lisboa y Madrid. El Río Tagus es vital para la cultura e historia aquí y se puede ver en muchas partes de la ciudad, además, las calles son empinadas y eso ayuda a visualizarlo mejor. Cuando es necesario, hablo español y la otra persona responde en portugués y entiendo quizás la mitad.

I seem to remember from a much earlier trip to Lisbon that the Portuguese were more friendly to you if you spoke English than if you spoke French. Based on the history between the two countries, I don't think there is much love lost between them.
I have never been enamored with Portuguese cooking.
Having been to a number of places colonized by the Portuguese and reading the history from the colonized viewpoint, it is fairly amazing that they pretty much whitewash their history.
