América, parte 4: Illinois

Aren´t they good looking grooms? // ¿No son guapos los novios?

The real reason for my trip to the US was to attend my good friend D´s wedding. He and his partner T live in Chicago and he had asked me to be a groomswoman. It was a marvelous celebration with live jazz music and a view of the river and themes of movies (for T who works in TV and film production) and video games (for D who is a physicist and gamer). Among my duties as groomswoman I needed to hand D the ring. I was super nervous about this because I was wearing gloves and lacked fine motor control, but I managed to not drop it and everything went well. On the other hand, when it came time for me to give my toast, I realized that my cell phone with all my notes was in a friend's pocket somewhere in the audience and I had to speak from memory. Luckily, I stumbled along okay. 

Since I had already visited four states, I hoped to avoid flying to Ohio to see my parents, so I convinced them to visit me in Illinois. We spent three days together in Kankakee, a suburb of Chicago, where we lived for many years when I was a child. We saw few old friends and I think all of us really appreciated the time together.

La razón principal por la que viajé a EE. UU. fue asistir a la boda de mi gran amigo D, ya que su pareja T y él planearon una boda en Chicago porque es donde viven. Además, D me invitó a ser dama de honor. Fue una gran celebración, con música jazz en vivo, una vista de una parte del río Chicago y una temática relacionada con las películas de los Oscar. Algunos amigos de la universidad asistieron también y tuvimos oportunidades de ponernos al día. Mis tareas como dama de humor fueron caminar por el pasillo y entregar a D el anillo. Tenía ansiedad de que dejara caer el anillo, porque me puse guantes, pero tuve mucha cautela y salió bien. Por otro lado, necesité hacer un brindis por los novios y fue una aventura. Había escrito notas en mi móvil, pero mi vestido no tenía bolsillos y por esta razón un amigo lo llevó. No recibí ningún aviso con suficiente tiempo y, en consecuencia, no tuve tiempo para recoger mi móvil, por lo que tuve que hablar sin notas. Gracias a Dios, no me olvidé de muchos detalles y nadie prestó atención a mis errores.

Después de estar en cuatro estados, no me quería ir a otro lugar, y convencí a mis padres de que me visitaran en Illinois. De hecho, pasamos tres días juntos en la ciudad de Kankakee, un suburbio de Chicago donde vivíamos cuando era niña. Nos vimos a algunos viejos amigos y cada uno de nosotros disfrutamos de la compañía.
