Echando de menos cosas // Missing things

Disfrutando la vida cerca de Washington, DC

Disfrutando la vida en Madrid

When I'm in the US, I miss Spain and, when I am in Spain, I miss the US. I knew this would happen because I've lived in a lot of places and there's a few things I miss from every one of them.

What's so great about the US? Without a doubt, it's my family and old friends. But also, it's delightful to understand everything that people say, and because my friends have houses with yards, it's easy to have a lot of contact with nature. The other thing I really love is how much Americans smile at people they don't know. Sometimes it's hard for me in Madrid, because smiling at strangers really marks you as decidedly weird, and some Spanish people have told me that they would interpret a smile from a stranger as a flirtation. So I try really hard not to do it. I know it's just a custom and not actually showing feelings, but as an American it can be hard to remember that people who aren't smiling when they catch your eye (or when they stare at you) aren't upset with you.

On the other hand there's a lot of things I like about Spain. I don't need to drive a car here. In fact, it's much easier to get around with public transportation most of the time. We're also outdoors a lot here. Almost all of the restaurants have tables on the sidewalks, even in the cold weather when you need to wear a coat, and it's really common to take a walk with someone rather than just sit somewhere. And as I've said in the past, the sobramesa tradition means that people spend a lot of time eating together and just relaxing and enjoying each other's company without being in a rush.

So, I've set myself up in a situation where I'm always going to miss something. Or put more positively, I have the opportunity to enjoy different things in different countries.

------

I like how you look at the positive side of things. Today we walked along the waterfront for the last time in 2024. We stopped at a cafe. Michael lingered with his coffee while I took a walk - I was too cold to sit still. I walked on to the harbor until rain turned me back. We need to do more lingering in cafe's next year!

It is often the people I miss the most from places. I guess if you never left one place of home, you'd wonder what you were missing out on!

Adventures, lingering in cafes is one of the best parts of Spain, so I´m glad you got to do it a bit before you got too cold. I´m glad you enjoy this country so much, especially since I get to hang out with you more as a result!

I definitely think of it as 'what I enjoy' of the two places (or in our case many places) versus 'what I miss'. More of a 'glass half full' approach.
