Recently a friend reminded me of an idea that I had heard in the past. Today, we live like kings did in the past. In fact, we live better than royalty did 300 years ago. I've been thinking a lot about this, and it makes me realize that we really are living in a miraculous world. for example, during the last 24 hours I did all of these amazing things:

• I ate a cake made with cardamom and cinnamon. Centuries ago these spices would have traveled months to arrive at my house, and only the elite would have had enough money to buy spices like this.
• I use however much hot water I need to do the dishes or shower and I don't have to carefully heat a small amount of water over a fire.
• I traveled dozens of kilometers in a metal cylinder (i.e. the metro) that is cleaner, more comfortable and faster than a carriage pulled by even the finest team of horses.
• When I had a headache, I took a pill that made all the pain go away.
• I ate dishes made from foods from many foreign countries ( including England, Italy, and India) with teeth that were strong and healthy. I have high maintenance teeth, which makes me extremely grateful for modern dentistry. If it didn't exist, I'd probably be toothless at this point.

We truly live in a time of miracles, compared to almost all of recorded history, and it's easy for me to forget that sometimes.

Recientemente, una amiga me recordó una idea que escuché en el pasado. Hoy en día vivimos como los reyes vivían hace algunos siglos. De hecho, vivimos mejor que los reyes hace 300 años. Estoy pensando muchísimo sobre este concepto, porque realmente estamos viviendo en un mundo milagroso/porque realmente vivimos en un mundo inimaginable. Durante las 24 horas anteriores, he hecho las siguientes cosas.

• He comido una tarta de manzana con canela y cardamomo. Hace cinco o seis siglos, estas especias habrían viajado durante meses para llegar a mi casa, y sólo la gente rica habría tenido suficiente dinero para comprarlas.
• He usado cualquier cantidad de agua caliente necesaria para lavar los platos o bañarme. No necesité calentar el agua en una chimenea.
• He viajado decenas de kilómetros en un cilindro de metal (el metro) que es más limpio, más cómodo y más rápido que un carruaje tirado por caballos.
• Cuando me ha dolido la cabeza, he tomado una pastilla que ha curado el dolor/que me ha quitado el dolor.
• He comido productos de países extranjeros (Inglaterra, Italia e India, entre otros) con dientes fuertes y sanos. Tengo dientes con problemas graves, y por eso, estoy tan agradecida de que haya odontología moderna. Si no hubiera existido eso, tendría solo encías sin dientes.

Realmente, es una época increíble, pero es fácil olvidarse de eso.

The Festival of Moors and Christians // La Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos

I've just returned from El Campello, near Alicante to visit my aunt and uncle. We specially chose this weekend so that I could attend the local Moors and Christian festival. These festivals are especially popular in the South of Spain, and relate to the Muslim takeover of the Iberian peninsula in the 700s and then the Spanish battle against them seven centuries later, something called the Reconquista ("Reconquering") here.

From an American perspective, these festivals seem anachronistic*, but it helps if you think of them as something akin to a Renaissance fair or how Disney does history. They have been going on for probably 5 or 6 centuries, and include very ritualistic battle enactments between "Christian" and "Muslim" groups of locals, parades where everyone shows off their costumes to the sound of marching bands, and stylistic speeches by "ambassadors" and "kings" from each side. They also can include groups of pirates, Hawaiians, and Roma people.**

*I also wondered if Muslims here consider it racist, but I could find very little on Spanish or English websites, except on the rare cases where blackface is still used. However, like in English, the term "Moor" is considered in poor taste here, except in reference to this festivals, I guess.

**No, these groups do not have anything to do with the conquest of the Iberian peninsula.

Acabo de regresar de El Campello, cerca de Alicante, donde visité a mis tíos. Elegimos estas fechas porque queríamos asistir a la Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos. Son especialmente populares en el sur de España y rememoran la conquista de la península ibérica de los musulmanes en el siglo VIII y la reconquista por parte de los españoles siete siglos después.

Desde una perspectiva estadounidense, los festivales son anacrónicos, pero es más fácil de asimilar si piensas que son como las ferias medievales o como lo explicaría Disney. Estas fiestas estuvieron celebrándose durante cinco o seis siglos, e incluyen batallas entre los cristianos y moros (por supuesto, todos son vecinos del pueblo.) También desfilan sincronizados y llevando disfraces. Al final, pueden incluir grupos de piratas, tribus de Hawaii y gitanos.

Thirty years later // Treinta años después

I was recently talking to a language exchange friend about how the world has changed during our lives. Later, it got me thinking about the differences between my very first stay in Europe in 1993 and my current experiences, almost exactly three decades after that first time.

To begin with, when I arrived in Germany in 1993, it was the first time I had ever been overseas, and the I as leaving my family home for the frist time. I was there for a year, and for months I was terribly homesick. Communication with my friends and family was limited to letters that we wrote on thin airmail paper and calls with my parents every three weeks. These calls never lasted more than thirty minutes, since they were so expensive. In contrast, now I talk with lots of friends and family weekly, without paying a cent.

Likewise, I carried a pocket dictionary everywhere in 1993, and I spend a lot of time looking up words. I don´t know if I´m actually learning more with the translation apps on my phone, but I am sure that I understand a lot more of what´s going on. Back then, I really didn´t know anyone who had lived aboard, so I couldn´t call on others´ experience, although I did have a host family, who helped me naviage the new culture and language. Now, the resources I use the most are Facebook group of immigrants to Spain and the Internet, plus my five decades of life experience, which give me patience and perspective

Estaba hablando con un amigo de intercambio sobre el tema de cómo ha cambiado el mundo durante nuestras vidas. Después, reflexioné sobre las diferencias entre mi primera vez viviendo en Europa en 1993 y mis experiencias actuales, justo tres décadas después.

Para empezar, cuando llegué a Alemania, fue la primera vez que vivía fuera del país y, del mismo modo, fuera de la casa de mi familia. Por tanto, durante meses me sentí terriblemente nostálgica. El contacto con mi familia y con mis amigos estaba limitado a cartas que escribíamos en papel muy fino para reducir el peso de las hojas y a llamadas con mis padres cada tres semanas, que no duraban más de treinta minutos por el costo. Al contrario, ahora hablo con amigos y familiares casi todos los días, sin pagar ni un centavo.

En 1993, llevaba un diccionario de bolsillo a todas partes, y pasaba mucho tiempo buscando palabras. No sé si estoy aprendiendo más con mi traductor del móvil que con el diccionario, pero estoy segura de que entiendo más ahora. Finalmente, no conocía a casi nadie que hubiera vivido en el extranjero, pero en Alemania, tenía la ayuda de mi familia de intercambio cuando no entendía la cultura o cómo funcionaba el mundo allí. Hoy en día, los recursos más útiles para mí son los grupos de Facebook de inmigrantes en España e Internet. Además, tengo cinco décadas de experiencia vital, que me han dado paciencia y perspectiva.

I spent the last week with lots of friends and family. For various reasons that I haven't detailed on the blog, the last few weeks have been difficult for me and I really needed this time with my loved ones to recharge and feel more like myself.

To begin with I went to Barcelona to visit some friends who were there for a few days before a cruise. J and S are parents of my friend N, and I lived in their empty apartment in Gainesville  before I moved to Spain. During that time in Florida, they treated me like a niece, including me in the family Thanksgiving and helping me establish roots there. It was a real delight to spend two days with them. We visited a cathedral that is famous for its guard geese* and ate a whole bunch of tapas. I also visited a Rosary service with them, in which they pray the rosary for half an hour, something I had never experienced.

I then quickly returned home, because my aunt, uncle, and cousin were visiting. My aunt and uncle are in the middle of a six-week trip to Europe and they wanted to visit their granddaughter and me, since we both now live in Madrid.

*Harnessing the naturally angry nature of geese to use them as guard geese is a brilliant idea, in my opinion.

Pasé el fin de semana pasado con muchos amigos y familiares. Esto es debido a algunas razones que no he mencionado en el blog, pues las últimas semanas han sido difíciles. En realidad, necesitaba tiempo con mis seres queridos.

Para empezar, viajé a Barcelona para visitar a unos amigos que estaban allí unos días antes de hacer un crucero. J y S son los padres de mi amigo N, y yo viví en su piso vacío en Gainesville cuando estaba en Florida antes de mi mudanza a España. Durante esa época me trataron como a una sobrina y fue un verdadero placer pasar dos días con ellos. vimos una catedral que se caracteriza por tener gansos para proteger el edificio. Después comimos muchas tapas juntos por ahí. Asimismo, asistimos a un servicio donde se rezó el Rosario durante media hora, y fue una nueva experiencia para mi.

Inmediatamente después, regresé a casa porque mis tíos y una prima estaban visitando Madrid. Mis tíos están pasando seis semanas en España, y querían ver a su nieta y verme a mí, porque ambas vivimos en la misma ciudad ahora.

Flashback: 1994 // Escena retrospectiva: 1994

In 1994, my family came to visit me in Germany as my exchange year in Braunschweig was ending. It was our family's first international trip together. My father had traveled to Mexico and Canada for work, but I think this was the first time any of them had been to Europe. We spent a few weeks driving around Germany, and tacked on a short stay in Prague. This was only five years after the wall had fallen, and both Prague the Czech Republic and the former Eastern Germany still strongly showed their communist past. Everything was worn down, construction was everywhere, and there weren't nearly as many tourists as you'd see today.

At the tourist office in Prague, we were approached by a local who wanted to rent us his apartment for the night. This was long before things like Airbnb existed, so this guy was essentially his own AirBnb ad. My father, who is far Bolder than me, decided we should take him up on his offer. He also invited the guy to dinner. We were taken to what looked to be a very authentic eating place. Long tables and benches filled a courtyard, and there was only one meal available: large potato dumplings topped with meat and gravy and big beers. I remember that meal to this day, because it is one of the few times when there really wasn't any vegetarian food. After scraping off the gravy, my dinner was meat-contaminated dumplings. But it was a really memorable experience to overnight in a more authentic, local apartment, and to see a bit of the city through a local's eyes.

Back then, you saw a lot "Trabis," the most common car manufactured in East Germany (officially named Trabants). // En esta época todavía se podían ver muchos ejemplos del coche más famoso de Alemania del Este, el Trabant (en alemán se llama “Trabi”).

En 1994, mi familia me visitó en Alemania después de que terminara mi año de intercambio en Brunswick. Fue el primer viaje internacional de mi familia. Mi padre visitó México y Canadá por razones laborales antes, pero creo que esa fue la primera vez que alguno de ellos había visto Europa. Condujimos durante Alemania durante algunas semanas y añadimos un pequeño viaje a Praga. Eso fue solo cinco años después de la caída del muro de Berlín, y tanto Chequia como la antigua Alemania del Este seguían mostrando huellas de su historia comunista. De hecho, toda la infraestructura estaba desgastada, había obras de todo tipo y no había tantos turistas como hoy en día.

En la oficina de turismo en Praga, conocimos a un hombre local que quería alquilarnos su piso. En esta época, todavía no existía Airbnb, así que ese hombre acudía a la oficina para conseguir clientes. Mi padre era menos tímido que yo y decidió aceptar esta oferta. Además, mi padre invitó a ese hombre a cenar con nosotros. Comimos en un restaurante que me pareció muy auténtico y local. Había un gran patio lleno de bancos y mesas largas. Había solo un plato disponible: albóndigas de patatas con salsa de carne. Todavía recuerdo esta comida porque fue una de las pocas veces en las que realmente no había comida para mí. Raspé la salsa y comí las albóndigas de patatas con sabor a carne. Al fin y al cabo, fue una experiencia memorable ver la ciudad a través de los ojos de un local.

Summer/ El verano

During my 50 years of life I have lived in a variety of climates. Of course, I like the temperate seasons of spring and fall. but I also know that I love winter more than summer. In spite of this, I have lived in parts of the world that have quite a bit of heat, like Florida, New Mexico and Georgia. However, Madrid's summer is definitely the worst I've had to contend with.

What I feel is not exactly like seasonal affective disorder, where people experience depression with the reduction of light and fall and winter, but there are some similarities. Near the end of spring I feel a little depressed and stressed when I think about the heat that´s coming my way. During the summers, I get a lot more headaches, and I don't like being outside or doing exercise. Even though I spend a lot of time in my air-conditioned apartment, there's still a lot of heat to contend with, because lots of restaurants, museums and Metro stations don't have much, if any, air conditioning.

When I came back to Madrid at the end of August, the weather had improved. Although it would still reach 30C (86F) , gone were the highs of 35 or 40C (95 or 105 F). I immediately felt better. And now when I walk in the park, my heart is practically singing, thinking of the fall days that are coming my way.

Durante mis 50 años de vida, he vivido en climas diferentes. Por eso sé con certeza que me gustan las estaciones suaves. También, me gusta el invierno más que el verano. Sin embargo, he vivido en partes del mundo con mucho calor como Florida, Nuevo México, y Georgia. Sin duda, el verano de Madrid es la peor opción para mí.

Mis sentimientos no son exactamente como el trastorno afectivo estacional, en el cual las personas experimentan depresión con la disminución de la luz del otoño e invierno, pero hay muchas similitudes. Cerca del final de la primavera, me sentí un poco deprimida y sentí miedo cuando pensé en el calor que se acercaba. Además, durante los veranos de 2023 y 2024, tuve mucho dolor de cabeza. No quería hacer deporte, y aunque pasara mucho tiempo en mi piso, todavía sufría mucho con el calor porque muchos restaurantes, museos y estaciones de metro no tenían aire acondicionado suficiente,

Cuando regresé en los últimos días de agosto, el tiempo había mejorado. Porque aunque los días superaban los 30 ºC, no había días de 35 o 40 ºC. Gracias a eso me sentí mejor inmediatamente. Cuando camino por el parque, mi corazón canta porque sé que los días refrescantes del otoño están cerca.

The county fair // La feria del condado

It was county fair season when I was in Ohio, so we loaded up the cars and went. County fairs are awesome. You can compete in almost everything: 4-H animals raised by kids, homemade jams and cakes, and posters like you'd make for a science fair, on agricultural and hunting topics. You can also dive into every type of fried food, take in the displays of agricultural machines, listen to concerts, and ride the rides.

I was planning to spend two or three hours there, but we spent eight hours there, right up until it closed. I found out that I can't actually eat that much fried food. (A serving of eight fried pickles is way too many fried pickles.) The animals were adorable, even though I knew that some of them were going to become someone's dinner. But the most fun for me was the rides. When I was a kid, my brother and I would get tickets for one or two rides, because rides were expensive. But at this one you could buy an unlimited-pass wristband. It wasn't that pricey, and I'm all for trying to relive childhood dreams, so I bought one and had the time of my life.

En EE. UU., cada condado rural tiene su propia feria durante el verano. Hay concursos para diferentes tipos de temáticas rurales: animales que crían los niños, mermeladas y bizcochos hechos en casa y carteles informativos que los niños hacen para enseñar sobre temas de agricultura y caza. También puedes disfrutar todo tipo de comida frita, exhibiciones de máquinas agrícolas, conciertos y muchas atracciones de feria.

Mis planes eran pasar dos o tres horas allí, pero pasamos casi ocho, hasta que la feria cerró. Descubrí que no podía comer sola tanto menú de comida frita. (¡Ocho grandes pepinillos fritos son demasiados!) Los animales eran preciosos, aunque sabía que muchos se convertirían en comida para alguien. Lo más divertido fueron las atracciones feriales. Cuando era niña, mi hermano y yo recibimos billetes suficientes para una o dos atracciones, porque estaban caros. Sin embargo, en esta feria podías comprar una pulsera que permitía subir a las atracciones sin límite. La compré y me lo pasé genial.

Camping, but not really // Acampar, pero no precisamente

As I've written about in the past, my graduate school friends and I have a tradition of spending a weekend together in Pennsylvnia every summer. I missed this last year because I was stuck in Spain waiting for my visa renewal and I really, really wanted to make sure I didn't miss it this year.

In the early years we camped. Now we're older and on more relaxed budgets, so we rent a house in the country, where there's space for the kids to run around in the fields but there's also air conditioning and plumbing. There's also a huge porch with rocking chairs and a campfire space where we can make s'mores and sing.

It goes without saying that we had to cancel in 2020 and 2021. After that, for a lot of different reasons (some illnesses, both minor and serious, and the aforementioned visa), the whole group hasn't been able to attend. So this was the first year since 2019 that we weren´t missing anyone, and it was really delightful to all be together once again.

I wanted to celebrate my September birthday with my friends. They decorated a cake and made me an amazing, personalized carde. // Quise celebrar mi cumpleaños con mis amigos. Ellos decoraron un pastel y me hicieron una carta personalizada.

Every year there´s a softball game, and every year the adults lose. It´s a given that I never play. //

At any give moment you can hear four different conversations and at last one board game is being played. // En cualquier momento, había cuatro conversaciones diferentes y al menos pudimos jugar a un juego de mesa.

Como describí en entradas pasadas, mis amigos de la escuela de posgrado y yo tenemos una tradición de pasar un fin de semana juntos en el estado de Pensilvania. Me perdí el evento el año pasado cuando estaba esperando mi nuevo visado para España y tenía muchas ganas de asistir este verano.

Desde hace muchos años, cambiamos el lugar donde nos vemos. En los primeros años, acampábamos. Ahora alquilamos una casa de campo, donde hay espacio para que los niños corran por los campos, pero también hay aire acondicionado y baños. Además, hay un porche con mecedores y un espacio grande para fogatas, donde hacemos “s'mores” (bocadillos dulces de galletas, malvaviscos tostados y chocolate) y cantamos.

Obviamente, cancelamos nuestra reunión en 2020 y 2021. Después, por muchas razones (varias enfermedades menores y graves, o la renovación de mi visado español), no pudimos asistir todo el grupo. Este año todos pudimos estar allí, por primera vez hasta 2019, y estar juntos de nuevo fue una experiencia encantadora.

Cyclists, welcome

In Sweden, I had my first opportunity to ride a bicycle in a country that truly embraces the bike as a legitimate transportation method. Before loaning me the bike, my cousin explained a few rules, but said it was mainly self-explanatory. Maybe for someone who cycled a decade in Amsterdam, but not for someone who has mainly cycled in the US and Spain! To begin with, paths are at sidewalk level, not street level, making it much less likely that cars will veer into you. Pedestrians look both ways before crossing the bike path, except at designated crossings.

It was such a different experience that I wanted to capture it for cyclists from places that, at best, tolerate them. On my first day, I only managed about 200m on the bike before someone yelled at me. Luckily, they yelled in English so I could learn what I did wrong. After that, I tried to follow someone going in my direction, and copy what they did.

There is abundant parking almost everywhere - at the train station, convenient to shops, and even dedicated, covered spots for some employees.

Here's an underpass so that bicycles can avoid a busy road. It includes on and off ramps to an intersecting bike path.

Separate signals for bicycles, pedestrians, and cars. They each run on their own schedule.

There are even bike paths outside the city, separated from the busy highway by a sturdy railing.

Since it's flat, you can carry a lot. I saw bicyclists pedaling with another adult and 1-2 kids in their front cargo area. (Not my photo - I didn´t manage to snap one of a cargo bike.)

I love beaches that don't have too many people on them. In summer, Spanish beaches are always packed. //  A mí me gustan las playas como estas, que están poco concurridas. En verano, las playas españolas siempre están llenas.

After my Malmö visit, I headed to Washington DC. There I did all the fun things I always do: enjoyed fire bowls with my friends, visited the lab where two friends do research on nuclear waste, cared for two cute guinea pigs while their families were traveling, and took a bunch of bike rides.

Although I only had five days there, my friends and I made a Herculean effort to arrange a beach trip. For the last ten years or so, I've had the tradition of going to an Atlantic Ocean Beach with my friend E and her two kids. Her husband hates the beach, and since we do the entire six- hour round trip in one day, it helps to have someone to share the driving with. Although everybody has a packed schedule in August, we found a day when four adults and four kids, spread across four different families, were able to go to Ocean City. The weather was absolutely perfect, with just enough clouds that we were neither too hot nor blinded by sunlight.

When I see a whiteboard filled with physics, I feel at home. // Cuando veo una pizarra blanca con mucha física como esa, me siento muy cómoda.

They don't always use buses or trains at the Dulles Airport in Virginia. They use “mobile salons,” which are also known as "people movers." They look like they're from the 60s, because they are. They are also slow and somewhat uncomfortable. //  

No hay muchos autobuses ni trenes en el aeropuerto de Dulles en Virginia. Usan estos “salones móviles” que se llaman informalmente “people movers". Me parece que son de los años sesenta y, en realidad, son de aquella época.

Después de mi visita a Malmö, fui a Washington, D. C. Hice todas las actividades normales para mí - disfrutar de las fogatas con amigos, visitar el laboratorio donde dos amigos hacen investigaciones sobre residuos nucleares, cuidar a dos conejillos de indias mientras su familia viajaba e ir en bicicleta con amigos.

Aunque pasé cinco días allí, mis amigos y yo hicimos un esfuerzo especial para ir a la playa. Durante la última década, mantengo la tradición de ir a una playa que pertenece al Atlántico con mi amiga E y sus dos hijos. Su esposo odia la playa, y el viaje de tres horas en coche de ida y tres horas de vuelta, todo en un día, es mejor con dos adultos para compartir la tarea de conducir. Todos mis amigos tienen la agenda llena en agosto, pero pudimos cuadrar un día en que cuatro adultos y cuatro niños de cuatro familias diferentes pudieron viajar a Ocean City, Maryland. El clima fue perfecto, con suficientes nubes para que no hiciera demasiado calor ni hiciera un sol deslumbrante.

Oops, three weeks have passed with out me blogging, since I was out having fun on vacations. But I returned to Spain a few days ago, and I'm going to get everything updated.

Malmö, Sweden boasta two different architectural marvels. The first is the Øresund Bridge between Copenhagen and malmo, which was built in 2000 and is a combined tunnel/bridge. When I arrived in the airport at Copenhagen I traveled to Malmö under the Øresund Sound for four kilometers until the train emerged on an artificial island and travelled another eight kilometers on a bridge.

The second thing is a twisted skyscraper which is called the Turning Torso. It looks as if the side of the building rotates 90° as it climbs 54 stories. I took a photo with this building and my bicycle for social media - members of my choir are all photographing our choir tote bag in exotic locations, and Malmö is as exotic as it got for me this summer.

Malmö doesn't really look like you'd expect Sweden to look. It's in the south near the Baltic Sea, and it's very flat without any hills or elevation. The coast is a prominent part of the landscape and it has mild winters. It's obvious how someone like my cousin, who has lived in Amsterdam and Copenhagen, would like living here.

Ups, han pasado tres semanas sin una entrada mientras disfrutaba de unas vacaciones. Pero hace tres días regresé a España y voy a actualizar mi blog.

La ciudad de Malmö, Suecia, es famosa por dos maravillas arquitectónicas. La primera es el Puente de Øresund entre Copenhague y Malmö, que se construyó en 2000. Es una combinación de puente y túnel . Cuando llegué al aeropuerto de Copenhague, fuí a Malmö en tren de manera subterránea viajando cuatro kilómetros desde el estrecho de agua de Øresund hasta llegar a la superficie en una isla artificial, finalmente, viajé casi ocho kilómetros más en un puente.

El segundo monumento importante es la torre giratoria, que se llama Turning Torso. Parece que un lado del edificio gira 90º mientras el edificio sube a lo largo de sus 54 plantas. Tomé una foto de la torre y de mi bici porque los miembros de mi coro toman fotos de las bolsas de nuestro coro para nuestras redes sociales.

Malmö no se parece a lo que la mayoría de la gente espera que sea Suecia. Está en el sur, cerca del Mar Báltico, y es muy plano, sin ninguna colina. La costa es una prominente parte del paisaje y tiene inviernos suaves. Está claro que una persona como mi prima, que vivió en Amsterdam y Copenhague, quiera vivir en esta ciudad.

Malmö again // Malmö, otra vez

I am in the middle of a month-long escape from Madrid heat. Recently I was in Malmö, Sweden. I spent a few days with my cousin A and her family. It is a real delight to have relatives in Europe (aka the Schengen Zone), and I am happy we are developing such nice connections.

It was a quiet visit. My only request was to go to a vegetarian Chinese buffet. We ate mountains of fake meat and everyone enjoyed it immensely, even while we were groaning and slowly waddling home. We went during my last visit the past December and I think this might develop into a regular tradition.

I also got to observe a cake adventure. My cousin and her daughters watch a TV series called, "Is it cake?" The contestants make cakes with that look like actual objects, usually with copious amounts of fondant. My cousin wanted to make a toilet cake. It turned out to be very difficult to stack layers that high and she had to use chopsticks to maintain the tower. It also took a lot of hands at one time to glue it together. In any case, the cake was a delicious spice sponge and we loved it, except for the fondant that everyone found disgusting.

I spent one extra week there, cat sitting while the rest of the family went on vacation. I loved being able to enjoy the cool weather along with the green and water everywhere. I didn't even mind bicycling one evening in the cold rain, because at least it wasn't summer in Madrid.

He empezado a huir de Madrid porque hace muchísimo calor y llevo casi un mes fuera. Recientemente estuve en Malmö, Suecia. Pasé algunos días con mi prima A y su familia. Es un verdadero placer tener familia en Europa (también conocida como la Zona Schengen), y estoy agradecida de poder visitarla con frecuencia y estrechar nuestros vínculos.

Fue una visita tranquila. Mi única petición fue comer en un restaurante buffet chino vegano. Comimos mucha carne vegetal, y todos la disfrutamos. Ya habíamos ido en diciembre y ahora espero que se convierta en una tradición cuando los visite.

Además, tuvieron una aventura pastelera. Mi prima y sus hijas ven una serie que se llama, «Is it cake?» (traducido como «¿Es pastel? ») Los concursantes hacen pasteles con la apariencia de un verdadero objeto, con la ayuda de mucha pasta de azúcar. Mi prima quiso replicar un pastel de un inodoro. Resultó muy difícil apilar tantas capas de pastel tan altas y necesitaron usar palillos para mantenerla en pie. También hicieron falta muchas manos al mismo tiempo para construirla. De todos modos, el pastel de canela y especias fue rico, excepto la pasta de azúcar, que todos estuvieron de acuerdo en que era asquerosa.

Pase una semana después eso, cuidando a las gatas mientras la familia está de vacaciones. Me alegra poder disfrutar del clima refrescante, con muchas plantas verdes y agua. Ni siquiera me importa la lluvia fría, porque sobre todo, no estoy parte del verano en Madrid.

Making Zwieback // Cocinando Zwieback

Cooking has played a huge role in my life and I've been doing it since I was a little kid. I'm sure that my parents encouraged me to help in the kitchen, because they encouraged us to try everything. My first definitive memory of cooking is making chicken and dumpling soup when I was eight years old. I was very proud of myself when my father congratulated me, and then he asked, "What's for the second course?" and I was crushed. I did not know that soup was often just a first course and cooking a single dish was the limit of my abilities at that time. Don't worry, I survived, and to this day, I tease him about it.

When I was a teenager, my brother and I were each required to cook one supper per week. This gave me the experience of everyday cooking, but cooking multi-course meals turned into a hobby. I was fascinated by etiquette books like Miss Manners that detailed all the rules of eight-course dinners and which fork to use. Then, I was able to use this knowledge when my parents would invite, say, 15 of their closest friends and buy all the food I needed for a meal. I'd cook for days to prepare and serve a meal of six or eight courses to them. This way I could learn to cook fancy food and they could enjoy themselves. Everyone was happy.

Later, I thought I wanted to become a professional chef, so I began working in the restaurant that my uncle owned. After a year of hard and not very well paid work, I decided that physics was a much better career and left to go back to college. Still, I learned a lot during this year and even now use the techniques that I learned at the restaurant daily.

Cocinar tiene un gran papel en mi vida y lo había hecho hasta que era niña. Estoy segura de que mis padres me animaban a ayudar en la cocina cuando era pequeña. Mi recuerdo más claro es que hice una sopa de pollo y empanadillas cuando tenía ocho años.Estaba orgullosa cuando mi padre me felicitó, entonces me pregunté: «¿Y cuál es el segundo plato?», y estaba aplastada. No sabía que, frecuentemente, una sopa es sólo el primer plato, y que un plato evidenciaría el límite de mis habilidades. No os preocupéis, sobreviví y ahora me burlo de él por esto.

Durante mi adolescencia, mi hermano y yo teníamos cada uno la responsabilidad de preparar una cena cada semana. Eso me dio la experiencia necesaria para preparar comida cotidiana, pero al final cocinar comidas de varios platos se convirtió en un pasatiempo. Leí en libros de etiqueta sobre las reglas de usar los platos y cubiertos en comidas formales y me fascinó. Mis padres invitaban a 15 o 20 sus amigos y compraban toda la comida, y cocinaba durante días para preparar y servir una comida de seis u ocho platos a ellos. Gracias a eso pude aprender a dominar nuevos platos y ellos podrían divertirse con sus amigos. Todos estaban felices.

Posteriormente, tenía interés en formarme como cocinera profesional, y por eso empecé a trabajar en el restaurante de mi tío. Después de un año de trabajo muy duro y mal pagado, elegí cambiar y estudiar física, pero aprendí muchísimo durante ese año y todavía uso las técnicas que aprendí en mi cocina cotidiana, algo útil sin duda.

My friend H asked me, “Do you think you will ever buy a small property in Spain or continue to rent? Is it possible to buy a small apartment?”

I currently live in an apartment and I like it. Because of the strong renter protections here, my landlady can only increase my rent a few percentage points each year, aligned with the cost of living, plus I'm allowed to renew every year for a total of five years. In addition, I like my neighborhood, which has more parks and less traffic than a lot of locations downtown. And probably the biggest reason for not moving is that it's just really difficult to rent new apartments here, as my experience two years ago showed. That's the reason why I don't have any current plans to move.

If I wanted to keep living in the city, it would be possible to buy an apartment, and if I wanted to live in the countryside, I could probably buy a small house. However, I'd need to pay in cash, rather than with a mortgage. As I understand it, it's really hard for people without proven salaries to get a mortgage, even if you can show the funds. Furthermore, they will mostly only give you a mortgage if you can pay it off by age 70, and I'm already almost 50. On the other hand, I really miss my garden and I'd love to have a new one someday. So we'll have to see where life takes me.

Mi amiga H preguntó: «¿Piensas que alguna vez comprarás una propiedad? ¿O sigues alquilando? ¿Es posible comprar un piso?»

En la actualidad, vivo en un piso y estoy contenta. Con las medidas de protecciones para los inquilinos, mi dueña puede aumentar el alquiler un pequeño porcentaje cada año, proporcional al aumento del coste de vida, y puedo renovar cada año hasta un periodo de cinco años en total. Me gusta mi barrio, que tiene más parques y menos tráfico que otros barrios más cerca del centro. Sobre todo, es extremadamente difícil alquilar nuevos pisos, como mi experiencia en 2023 evidenció. En consecuencia, actualmente no tengo en mente mudarme.

Si quisiera quedarme viviendo en la ciudad, sería posible comprar un piso. Si quisiera vivir en el campo, quizás pueda comprar una casita. No obstante, podría pagar al contado en vez de pagar con hipoteca. Como entiendo, es difícil para personas sin sueldos obtener una hipoteca, y además pagar toda la hipoteca antes de que tengas 70 años es un requisito, y ya tengo casi 50 años. Por otro lado, echo de menos mi huerto y jardín muchísimo, y me gustaría tener estos espacios de nuevo. Así, vamos a ver cómo se desarrolla todo con los años.

Then and now, how I spend my time // Ahora y entonces, cómo paso mi tiempo

How do I spend my time? When I do my (approximately) annual retreats, I pick a part of my life to ponder - my values, how I spend my money, what's most important in my life.

In 2016, I tracked my time for a few weeks to see what I did with my time. I was working then, and I remember that it was a fairly typical week except that I was working off site so had to drive more than usual. When I counted up the numbers at the end, I felt like I was mostly doing things that I aligned with my values. However, I did hope I could spend less time driving and ironing, two things I dislike.

Nine years later, I decided to repeat the experiment. I've had significant changes in my life since then, and I was curious to see how that affected what I do every day. The biggest change, obviously, is that I no longer work, but I also live in a new country, in a tiny city apartment instead of a inner-suburb house, and have fewer friends and no pets.

And here's how it looks. Since I don't work, I've added 10 hours more of sleep, 15 hours of hobbies, and 8 hours more of socializing with friends each week. Those are all changes I really like, and I wouldn't have guessed that I'd be sleeping that much more! I also don't have pets or a house to care for, which are things I definitely miss, but I have a partner to spend time with which is a really welcome development.

¿Cómo paso el tiempo?
Cuando hago mis retiros (aproximadamente anuales), elijo una parte de mi vida que quiero examinar/analizar: mis valores, cómo gasto mi dinero o qué es lo más importante en mi vida.

En 2016, durante algunas semanas, rastreé mi tiempo para aprender cómo gestiono mi tiempo. En esa época, estaba trabajando y recuerdo que esas semanas fueron como las típicas, excepto por trabajar lejos de mi oficina habitual y por necesitar conducir más de lo normal.

Después de nueve años, decidí repetir mi prueba. Experimenté cambios significativos en mi vida desde entonces, y tenía curiosidad por descubrir cómo éstos han afectado a mis días cotidianos. Obviamente, el cambio más grande es que no trabajo, pero además vivo en un nuevo país, en un piso pequeñito en la ciudad, en lugar de una casa en un suburbio, y además tengo menos amigos y ninguna mascota.

Estos son los resultados semanales. Como no trabajo, añadí 10 horas más de sueño, 15 horas más de pasatiempos y 8 horas más con amigos, cada semana. Me gustan mucho estos cambios. ¡Sin embargo, nunca adivinado que iba a dormir tanto!

Por otro lado, no cuido mascotas ni la casa me supone tanto mantenimiento como antes, y echo de menos esas cosas. De todos modos, tengo pareja ahora, y paso tiempo con él, lo cual es un aspecto muy positivo.

In Spain, we do something called language exchanges. This is something I've seen in Germany also but never in the US. The purpose is for people to help others learn their mother tongue at the same time that they are learning a language. For example, I frequently go to a language exchange at a restaurant where a group speaks for 20 minutes in Spanish, then 20 minutes in English, for two hours. At every table there are native speakers of both English and Spanish, and in this way the attendees can practice their English, or in my case my Spanish, with others who are fluent.

My favorite language exchanges are between just two people. When I arrived in Madrid in 2023, I looked for people who spoke Spanish clearly and slowly, and who were serious about learning English, and then I'd ask them if they wanted to do a language exchange with me. I met two people that I still meet with weekly to practice. In one of these exchanges, we visit all kinds of art and museum exhibits and it's really a lot of fun to talk about artworks or history and not just practice verb conjugations. Here's a sampling of what I've seen in the past few months.

En España, como en Alemania, hay una costumbre de estudiantes de idiomas que se llama un intercambio, cuyo objetivo es que las personas ayuden a otras a aprender su idioma materno al mismo tiempo mientras aprenden un nuevo idioma ellos mismos. Por ejemplo, he visitado frecuentemente un intercambio en un restaurante donde el grupo habla 20 minutos en español, 20 minutos en inglés, durante dos horas. En cada mesa hay hablantes de español y de inglés, y de esta manera, los participantes pueden practicar su inglés (o en mi caso, el español) con hablantes del idioma materno.

Mis intercambios favoritos son con solo dos personas. Cuando llegué a Madrid en 2023, busqué a personas que hablaran español claramente y lentamente, y que se tomaran en serio el aprendizaje del inglés. Conocí a dos personas con las que todavía tengo una reunión semanal para practicar. En un intercambio, visitamos exposiciones de todo tipo en Madrid, y siempre es divertido hablar sobre obras de arte y no solo practicar las conjugaciones de verbos. Aquí hay una muestra de lo que he visto en los últimos meses.

Flashback to 1978 // Recuerdo de 1978

When I was little, we moved a lot. Before I turned four years old, I had lived in three different states. In fhis photo, from 1978, I´m three years old, and my brother is one. We lived in Wisconsin at the time, but only for a few months. We had moved there for my father´s new job, but a few months after we arrived, the company started laying people off, following the old, "Last in, first out," rule, so we left soon after.

I remember three things about my time in Wisconsin, but I'm not entirely sure if these are real memories or just stories from my parents. First, there were three people who had the namd Jerry in my neighborhood_ my father, a neighbor, and a little boy who lived on our street. I was astounded by the idea that multiple people could have the same name. Second, train tracks ran right behind our backyard, and my parents assure me now that we quickly got used to the noise. Lastly, I remember being given a gigantic gumball. I found this delightful at the time, even though I now hate gum.

In the photo, it looks like I love my little brother, and that was actually the case. We spent a lot of time playing together in our childhood and we were good friends. We only had problems during the times when we needed to share a bedroom, because I am very organized and he was a slob. Today we are still good friends and he is also an organized minimalist, just like me.

Yo era una niña que se mudaba mucho de casa. Después de cumplir cuatro años, viví en tres estados diferentes. Esta foto es de 1978, cuando tenía tres años, con mi hermano, que tenía un año. Vivíamos en Wisconsin pero solo por menos de un año. Nos mudamos allí por un nuevo puesto de trabajo de mi padre, pero seis meses después, la empresa tuvo que despedir gente y se basó en la siguiente premisa: “El último que fue contratado será el primero en ser despedido” consecuentemente nos tuvimos que mudar poco después.

Recuerdo tres cosas sobre mi tiempo en Wisconsin, pero no estoy segura si son recuerdos verdaderos o son historias de mis padres. Primero, había tres personas con el nombre Jerry en mi barrio: mi padre, un vecino, y un niño que vivía en nuestra calle. Era tan joven que me parecía increíble que las personas pudieran tener el mismo nombre. Segundo, las vías del tren bordeaban nuestro patio trasero. En tercer lugar, recuerdo que un día alguien me dio una bola de chicle grande. Lo recuerdo como algo impresionante, pero desde hace años detesto el chicle.

En esta foto, parecía que amaba a mi hermano, y esa es la verdad. Pasábamos mucho tiempo jugando juntos durante nuestra infancia, fuimos grandes amigos. Solo tuvimos diferencias cuando necesitamos compartir un cuatro, porque yo era muy organizada y él era un desastre. Todavía muestra relación sigue siendo buena, pero ahora él es organizado y minimalista, como yo.

To boldly go where no one has gone before // Hasta alcanzar lugares donde nadie ha podido llegar

In my last entry, I talked about my experience going to a Las Vegas Star Trek convention. This reminded me that I haven´t written much about my Star Trek group recently. This group began in 2006, during the time when DVDs of TV shows like Star Trek cost an arm and a leg, and were certainly beyond the budget of poor graduate students like me. Someone (who will remain nameless) gave me illegal copies of Star Trek and grad school friends wanted me to share these precious objects. At first, just loaned CDs, but soon we decide to watch them together. And at that moment, Star Trek Group was born.

Before long, we were six or eight people meeting weekly to watch ST: The Next Generation. We spent several years like this, traveling to each other´s houses, and watching, always with beer and popcorn. Two years later, peopel started graudating, moving to other states, and leaving the group. When I began my postdoc in Miami, I didn´t want to drop out, so I decided to attend bia Google Meet, and soon other former members retuned. This facility with videocalls helped us immensely during the panddmic when we switched to fully virtual get-togethers.

For the next 19 years, people joined or left the group, depending on their personal circumstances. They got promoted in their jobs and had kids. The kids got older and started watching Star Trek too. Currently, we watch an episode on our own before getting together, then spend the hour chatting about the episodes and catching up on everything else in our lives. This group is so important to me that I stay up until 2am every Tuesday night to take part. The members are some of my very closest friends and our friendships have helped support me through a lot of changes in my life, including the lonely move to Spain. I´m really grateful and sort of amazed that the group has lasted so long.

En mi última entrada hablé sobre una visita a Las Vegas para una conferencia de Star Trek. Eso me recordó que no había escrito durante mucho tiempo sobre mi grupo de Star Trek. El grupo empezó en 2006 en una época en la que los DVD de Star Trek o de otras series tenían precios poco asequibles. Alguien (no voy a decir su nombre) me dio unas copias ilegales de las series y algunos amigos en mi programa de posgrado de física querían que laos compartiera con ellos. Para empezar, presté los CD, pero pronto decidimos verlos juntos. Con esa idea, el grupo de Star Trek nació.

Al poco tiempo, éramos solíamos ser un grupo de 6-8 personas que se reunía cada semana para ver un programa de Star Trek: La Nueva Generación. Pasamos algunos años así, cada semana en una casa de algún miembro y siempre con cerveza y palomitas. Después de dos años, algunos amigos se graduaron, se mudaron a otros estados y dejaron el grupo. Cuando empecé mi trabajo posdoctoral en Miami, no quería dejar de participar en el grupo y empecé a asistir con Google Meet, y pronto otros miembros antiguos regresaron. Esa acción nos ayudó mucho durante la pandemia porque ya sabíamos cómo usar las videollamadas.

Durante los siguientes 19 años, las personas salen o vuelven al grupo, dependiendo de sus circunstancias personales. Ellos avanzaron en sus carreras y tuvieron hijos. Luego los hijos empezaron a ver Star Trek también. Hoy en día, vemos el episodio antes de la reunión y usamos esta hora para hablar sobre eso y sobre nuestras vidas. Este grupo es tan importante para mí que me quedo despierta a las dos de la mañana para participar. Estos amigos significan mucho para mi y han sido un gran apoyo a medida que mi vida ha cambiado.
