• 1600 km cycling (994 miles)
• 105 km walking per month, average (65 miles)
• 6 counties visited: US, Czechia, Germany, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden
• 38 books read: 30 in English, 1 in German, 7 in Spanish

Because I hang out with a nerdy crowd, I know lots of people that track all kinds of things in their life. For example, people count how many hours they spent outside in the previous year, or how many tacos they eat each month. I don't track that much, but, conveniently, my smartwatch, Google, and the library had some numbers for me, and they happen to be the ones that helped me see how I did on my goals for the last year.

Last January, I decided I wanted to exercise more. Mainly that meant walking, because at that time I did not have a bicycle. Once I bought a bike, I trained for my cycling vacation, then set a goal of two rides per week, which I have mostly maintained, along with regular extra walks.

I don't usually bother having reading goals, mainly because I read lots without much effort. I probably read less than usual this year since I was trying to focus more on Spanish learning. To that end, I'm pleased that I managed one German book and seven Spanish books. Ideally, I'd like to double those numbers for German and Spanish next year.

Como paso tiempo con muchos frikis, conozco a mucha gente que realiza un seguimiento de sus actividades. Por ejemplo, las personas cuentan cuántas horas pasaron al aire libre durante el año pasado o cuántos tacos consumieron cada mes. A mí no me importa contar muchas cosas, pero lo hago con mi reloj inteligente. También Google y la biblioteca tenían números sobre mis actividades. Con esos datos puedo entender mi éxito hacia algunos objetivos de 2024.

En enero pasado quería hacer más ejercicio. Para empezar, eso significaba dar paseos. Luego compré una bicicleta para practicar antes de unas vacaciones en bicicleta y después propuse como meta hacer dos paseos en bicicleta por semana. Lo conseguí en gran medida, y seguí caminando también.

Normalmente, no tengo metas de lectura porque leo muchísimo y sin esfuerzo. En 2024, leí menos porque me enfoqué en aprender español. Por esta razón, estoy contenta de haber leído un libro en alemán y siete libros en español; como propósito principal, quiero duplicar esos números en 2025.

Hamburg // Hamburgo

My cousin in Sweden told me about a house sitting surface she uses. When she goes on vacation, someone who would like to visit her town of Malmo, can stay at her house and take care of her cats. No money is exchanged, but everybody gets something out of it. The service uses a system like airbnb, so that everyone gets vetted and accumulates a reputation and recommendations. I have been dying to try this, but had to wait until my visa stuff was all worked out .

Last week was my first opportunity, when I spent 10 days in Hamburg. My trip there was complicated by a delayed flight, which meant I spent the night sleeping on a granite airport floor. but with patience and many naps I arrived. The apartment where I stayed was much nicer than my own, with things like a dishwasher and a clothes dryer. The cats were typical cats, happy to be fed as long as nobody touched them. I simply adored being in Germany again. I simply feel more at home there, which I think is a combination of the climate and environment being more like the midwestern US, coupled with my still greater facility with German. While I understand more every month in Spain, it continues to take a great deal of effort, whereas German slides into my brain without me trying. I hope to visit again soon.

Hamburg is truly a harbor city. There is water simply everywhere, shipping played a major role in its history, and ferries are part of the regular transportation system. // Hamburgo es una gran ciudad portuaria. Hay agua en todas partes, el envío de mercancías fue importante en su historia y los transbordadores son una parte del sistema de transporte público.

I just love German food, especially the dumplings, the cake, and the beer. I came back vowing to cook German more. // Me encanta la comida alemana, especialmente los dumplings (albóndigas de harina cocidas), el bizcocho y la cerveza. Regresé prometiendo cocinar más recetas alemanas.

A fun tourist attraction is the Elbe tunnel - built in 1911, with an art deco kind of feel. It's about 500 m long and is 24m under the river. // El túnel del Elba es una atracción turística divertida. Fue construido en 1911, su estilo es parecido al art déco. Tiene cerca de 500 m de largo y está a 24 m por debajo del río.

Mi prima en Suecia me habló de un servicio de cuidado de casas y mascotas que ha utilizado. Cuando su familia va de vacaciones, si alguien quiere visitar su ciudad de Malmö, puede vivir en su casa a cambio de cuidar de sus gatas. El servicio utiliza un sistema similar a Airbnb, en el que personas acumulan reputaciones y reseñas. Sin duda, quise usarlo, pero necesitaba esperar hasta tener mi nuevo visado.

Esta semana fue mi primera oportunidad para probarlo, y pasé diez días en Hamburgo. Mi llegada fue complicada porque mi vuelo fue cancelado, como resultado, dormí durante la noche en el suelo de granito del aeropuerto. Al final, con paciencia y muchas siestas, llegué. El piso era más bonito que el mío, y tenía lujos como un lavavajillas y una secadora de ropa. Las gatas eran las típicas gatas, que querían comida y que nadie les tocara. Adoro estar en Alemania otra vez. Me siento a gusto allí, y creo que la razón es que el clima y el entorno son como el medio oeste de EE. UU. y también creo que hablo el alemán mucho más fácilmente que el español. Cada mes entiendo más el español, pero siempre se requiere mucho esfuerzo. En contraste, el alemán fluye en mi cabeza sin que yo haga tantos esfuerzos. Espero visitarla pronto otra vez.

Christmas // Navidad

This Christmas my family decided to celebrate in Florida. We wanted a getaway that wasn't at someone's house so we could be in tourist mode and not do any house projects, as is my family's typical vacation activity. (One memorable Christmas vacation we spent the entire week building scaffolds and painting the inside of my parents´ house. Productive, but not relaxing.)

We ended up in the panhandle of Florida, in a small town known mostly for the fact that the movie Truman was filmed there. There was lots of yummy food, bicycling, and games. I didn't actually play many of the games, because those started at 8pm and that's when jet lagged me usually went to bed. It is a special treat when we can all get together, now that my brother's family and I live nine time zones apart, Plus both the teens and retired grandparents have busy lives of their own.

My brother demonstrates that I am the boringest bicycle rider in my family. // Mi hermano deja claro que, cuando voy en bicicleta, soy aburrida.

While the Christmas dinner menu can vary, our breakfast is traditionally something like waffles or crepes, along with mimosas and sausage. // El menú de la comida de Navidad cambia cada año, pero el desayuno tradicional incluye algo como crepes con mimosas, y salchichas de carne y de verduras.

The vacation house came with bicycles and they were well used. // En la casa en la que pasábamos las vacaciones había bicicletas, y las usamos mucho.

One of the best gifts, a mug for my nephew from his grandparents. // Uno de los mejores regalos fue una taza para mi sobrino de parte de sus abuelos.

We had a tornado warning at 3am, and only two (small rooms were windowless). I´m the one on the right, trying to catch a nap while we were waiting. // Tuvimos una advertencia de tornados cercanos a las tres de la mañana. Había solo dos pequeñas habitaciones sin ventanas. Yo era la persona de la derecha, intenté dormir un poquito.

Este año, mi familia decidió celebrar la Navidad en Florida. Queríamos un viaje que no fuera en la casa de alguien porque queríamos ser turistas y no hacer tareas del hogar como ocurre comúnmente en mi familia. (Alguna Navidad pasamos toda la semana construyendo andamios y pintando las paredes interiores de la casa de mis padres. El trabajo fue productivo, pero no relajante).

Al final, elegimos un lugar en Florida, un pueblo pequeño conocido por el hecho de que la película The Truman Show fue filmada allí. Había mucha comida rica, paseos en bicicleta y juegos de mesa. La verdad es que no jugué a muchos juegos porque todos empezaban a las ocho o nueve de la noche y ese fue el horario en el que me iba a la cama a causa de la descompensación horaria. Es un placer cuando toda la familia puede estar en el mismo lugar, especialmente ahora que la familia de mi hermano y yo vivimos con nueve zonas horarias de diferencia. Más allá de eso, los adolescentes y los abuelos tienen vidas muy ocupadas.
