There are two holidays in Madrid during the month of November: All Saints Day and the Virgin of Almudena Day. In addition, there are two non-official holidays. This year I got to celebrate almost all of them and so I'm going to introduce you to them.

The first, well-knowned by Americans, is Halloween on the 31st of October. This is not really a very important day in Spain. They do have decorations in some stores and sometimes you see people in costumes on that day. For example, I watched by a bar where all the waiters were wearing costumes but none of the customers were.You can also occasionally see groups of costumed children with their parents who are standing around chatting on the sidewalks. I think this is because the idea of trick or treating is quite rare, so these kids don't really have anywhere to go. However, you can occasionally “trick or treat” at stores, although it´s unclear to me how you know which ones will hand out candy. My minor celebration of this holiday happened in my classes, where we took a field trip to historical buildings in Madrid that are supposedly haunted.

Then the 1st of November is All Saints Day, an official holiday where you visit the cemeteries to place flowers on your loved ones' graves. You also can attend a special mass. Since I don't have any family members interred here, I simply visited the cemetery and thought about them. The following day is the Day of the Dead, which is a Mexican holiday that the Spanish borrow. Some cultural centers and city buildings organized alters of the dead, so I visited a few of those period

Lastly, the 9th of December is the holiday of the Virgin of Almudena, the incarnation of the Virgin Mary specific to the city of Madrid. It's only a holiday in this city, where it is celebrated by a special mass (See the theme? Many Spanish holidays involve a special mass.) and a procession with the decorated statue of the Virgin. I went my first year here, and after that I did like almost all the other locals, so I stay at home relaxing.

Hay dos días festivos oficiales en Madrid durante el mes de noviembre: el Día de Todos los Santos y el Día de la Almudena. Sin embargo, hay otros días que no son festivos, pero sí son importantes. Este año celebraré casi todos y por eso voy a explicar qué pasa en cada de ellos.

Para empezar, como saben los estadounidenses, el 31 de octubre es Halloween. No es un día muy importante en España. Aunque, hay algunos adornos en las tiendas y, a veces, ves a personas con disfraces. Por ejemplo, pasé por un bar donde los camareros llevaban disfraces, pero ninguno de los clientes estaba disfrazado. Además, vi a algunos grupos de niños disfrazados con sus padres, que charlaban juntos durante mucho tiempo en la calle. Pero la idea de ir de casa en casa diciendo “truco o trato” no es nada frecuente, aunque es posible entrar en algunas tiendas para recoger algún dulce. Mi celebración fue parte de mis clases, cuando hicimos una excursión por edificios históricos con historias escalofriantes.

Para continuar, el 1 de noviembre fue el Día de Todos los Santos, que es un día para visitar los cementerios y poner flores en las tumbas de tus seres queridos, o cerca de ellas, en algunos casos. También puedes asistir a una misa especial. Como no tengo las tumbas de mis familiares aquí, visité un cementerio y pensé en mis seres queridos fallecidos. Después de eso, el 2 de noviembre es el Día de los Muertos, que no es un día festivo de España, sino de México. Algunos centros culturales organizaron altares del Día de los Muertos, y visité algunos.

Finalmente, el 9 de noviembre es el Día de la Almudena, una advocación de la Virgen María muy importante para la ciudad de Madrid. Es un día festivo de la Comunidad de Madrid, cuando hay una procesión con la estatua de la Almudena. La vi en mi primer año en España, y desde entonces, hago como casi todos los madrileños y me quedo en casa descansando.

Excursiones // Outings

Now that my Spanish is improving, I've been thinking about whether I want to live in a different part of Spain. If I moved to a smaller city, I could rent a larger apartment and have greater access to Nature than is really possible in a metropolis like Madrid. On the other hand there are a lot of advantages to living here and lately I have been really enjoying them.

For example, last week I attended three different classical music concerts. The first was an orchestra that performed a modern work about the history of Sephardic Jews from the 15th century to the present. It included some spoken descriptions of the history in Ladrino, a language that combines medieval Spanish with a bunch of other languages, including Hebrew, Greek, and Turkish.. The second concert was a Russian solo pianist who was simply incredible. The final was a small, acapella choir that sang folk songs from around the world. Every single one of the concerts was free and every single one produced super high quality music. I wouldn't find opportunities like this in smaller towns, and it's a good reason to stay here.

My friends J and B inivited me on a 8 km (5 mile) hike through the countryside, followed by a delicious, three-course Spanish lunch. // Mis amigos J y B me invitaron a una excursión de senderismo de 8 kilómetros (5 millas) por el campo, y después, comimos una comida riquísima.

This was an exhibit of a sculptor who work with resin, usually featuring the same balding, overweight male figure. // Visité una exposición de un escultor que trabaja con resina, frecuentemente esculpiendo la misma figura, la de un hombre calvo y con sobrepeso.

A Mexican organization organized an art exhibit for the Day of the Dead. // Una organización de México organizó una exposición de arte mexicano por el Día de los Muertos.

Ahora que mi español está mejorando, estoy pensando si quiero vivir en otra parte de España. Si me mudara a una ciudad más pequeña, podría alquilar un piso más grande y también quizás estaría más cerca de la naturaleza de lo que en realidad estoy en Madrid. Por otro lado, vivir en Madrid tiene muchas ventajas y las estoy disfrutando muchísimo.

Por ejemplo, la semana pasada asistí a tres conciertos de música clásica. El primero fue una sinfonía, que interpretó una obra moderna sobre la historia de los judíos sefardíes, con leltra en ladino, un idimoa que es una mezcla de castellano medieval y otros lenguas como el griego, el turco otomano y el hebreo. El segundo de ellos fue una pianista rusa que vive en EE. UU. y toca el piano maravillosamente. El final fue un coro a capella que contaba canciones populares de diferentes partes del mundo. Todos los conciertos fueron gratuitos y todos fueron de un nivel altísimo. No encontraría oportunidades como esas en municipios pequeños, y es un armazón de peso para quedarme aquí.

Recently a friend reminded me of an idea that I had heard in the past. Today, we live like kings did in the past. In fact, we live better than royalty did 300 years ago. I've been thinking a lot about this, and it makes me realize that we really are living in a miraculous world. for example, during the last 24 hours I did all of these amazing things:

• I ate a cake made with cardamom and cinnamon. Centuries ago these spices would have traveled months to arrive at my house, and only the elite would have had enough money to buy spices like this.
• I use however much hot water I need to do the dishes or shower and I don't have to carefully heat a small amount of water over a fire.
• I traveled dozens of kilometers in a metal cylinder (i.e. the metro) that is cleaner, more comfortable and faster than a carriage pulled by even the finest team of horses.
• When I had a headache, I took a pill that made all the pain go away.
• I ate dishes made from foods from many foreign countries ( including England, Italy, and India) with teeth that were strong and healthy. I have high maintenance teeth, which makes me extremely grateful for modern dentistry. If it didn't exist, I'd probably be toothless at this point.

We truly live in a time of miracles, compared to almost all of recorded history, and it's easy for me to forget that sometimes.

Recientemente, una amiga me recordó una idea que escuché en el pasado. Hoy en día vivimos como los reyes vivían hace algunos siglos. De hecho, vivimos mejor que los reyes hace 300 años. Estoy pensando muchísimo sobre este concepto, porque realmente estamos viviendo en un mundo milagroso/porque realmente vivimos en un mundo inimaginable. Durante las 24 horas anteriores, he hecho las siguientes cosas.

• He comido una tarta de manzana con canela y cardamomo. Hace cinco o seis siglos, estas especias habrían viajado durante meses para llegar a mi casa, y sólo la gente rica habría tenido suficiente dinero para comprarlas.
• He usado cualquier cantidad de agua caliente necesaria para lavar los platos o bañarme. No necesité calentar el agua en una chimenea.
• He viajado decenas de kilómetros en un cilindro de metal (el metro) que es más limpio, más cómodo y más rápido que un carruaje tirado por caballos.
• Cuando me ha dolido la cabeza, he tomado una pastilla que ha curado el dolor/que me ha quitado el dolor.
• He comido productos de países extranjeros (Inglaterra, Italia e India, entre otros) con dientes fuertes y sanos. Tengo dientes con problemas graves, y por eso, estoy tan agradecida de que haya odontología moderna. Si no hubiera existido eso, tendría solo encías sin dientes.

Realmente, es una época increíble, pero es fácil olvidarse de eso.
