Remembering Dr. R // Recordando al Dr. R

When I was in graduate school I had two advisors. Advisors are the professors who supervise your research and mentor you until you complete your dissertation. I was extremely lucky to have both of them, as they supported so that I developed into a responsible, caring, and contributing member of my profession. I'm only going to talk about one of them today, because he died this month and I want to remember all that he did for me.

My years in graduate school were difficult, probably because I was not sufficiently prepared for the academics. I failed my qualifying exam repeatedly, along with a class or two. This mean that I was on academic probation and that I spent about four years wondering whether I would have to leave because I didn't couldn't demonstrate sufficient academic knowledge to be allowed to complete my research.

Dr. R was a well-established member of the department and of the physics education research community. I remember and appreciate the most the fact that he didn't give up on me. As long as I was willing to keep struggling through the learning and the exams, he supported me. I suspect many professors would have encouraged me to leave the program instead.

I also remember all the things he taught me. He modeled being intensely and genuinely curious about everything. He was also the seed of a research group that was welcoming, passionate about learning, and generous when it came to acknowledging contributors to ideas and research papers.

I am grateful I got to work with him and he will be missed.

Oh no! I hadn’t heard. I’m so sorry to hear about that. He was a neat guy and an inspiration to eclectic and multidisciplinary graduate students even if he wasn’t my advisor.

It is a rare blessing to find an advisor and mentor who will value you as the achiever and not as the one who has achieved. I had a track coach in college like that and was greatly blessed.

I'm sorry for your loss. I remember those days were very demanding of you, and it takes a village sometimes to do hard things. I'm sure he'll be very missed.
