Nottingham

The previous weekend I took a very important trip to England. I have not been in the country for more than a decade, and I wanted to take advantage of the proximity of Spain to visit the parents of my late husband, as well as a good friend that I knew in DC, who has since moved back to her native soil. I only spent a few days there, because my visa still doesn´t allow me to leave Europe (well, the Schengen zone) too often.

The weather was not amazing, but we still enjoyed ourselves. We visited a stately home from the Elizabethan era, Hardwick Hall. The original inhabitants were required to house the prisoner Mary, Queen of Scots, for years, a task that sounded grueling and very expensive. It was an impressive house and we also utilized the opportunity to enjoy English cake in the tea room. It was lovely to spend time with my former in-laws and hope that I can return in the future. My friend L took good care of me and fed me with delicious English foods that I can't get here, including two kinds of scones.

El último fin de semana hice un viaje importante y visité Inglaterra. No había estado en este país desde hacía más de una década. Quería aprovechar la cercanía de España con Inglaterra para visitar a los padres de mi marido fallecido, así como a una buena amiga que volvió a Inglaterra. Pasé pocos días allí porque no puedo salir de Europa (Schengen) con mucha frecuencia debido a las limitaciones que tiene mi visado actual.

El tiempo no fue muy bueno, pero nos divertimos mucho. Visitamos una casa de campo de estilo isabelino, Hardwick Hall. Los primeros habitantes cuidaron a la reina María Estuardo, prisionera de la reina Isabel, durante años. Fue una casa impresionante y además nos proporcionó la oportunidad de comer bizcocho inglés en el salón de té. Me entusiasmó pasar tiempo con mis antiguos suegros y espero que pueda regresar en un futuro. Mi amiga L me cuidó y me alimentó con unos platos que estaban para chuparse los dedos, especialmente dos tipos de scones.

Smithsonians / Los museos Smithsonianos

One of the real treasures of the United States are the Smithsonian museums. They got their name from James Smithson,a British scientist who collected art and other historical and scientific objects in the 19th century. He bequeathed this all to the United States government, although it's not clear to me why he left all his belongings to a country he never visited. In any case, today there are more than a dozen Smithsonians, all run by the US federal government. It doesn't cost anything to get in, and that´s the reason why I always expect all museums to be free.

I got to visit three different museums during my Washington DC trip. The first I selected because nothing like it exists in Madrid - the National Museum of American history. It's famous for the exhibition of First Ladies´ dresses as well as its large collection of Hollywood/ pop culture items.. I love seeing clothing in museums now that I sew and understand much more about construction techniques.

The best part was a visit to the National Air and Space Museum, which had a great exhibition on the race to the moon as well as the original Star Trek spaceship Enterprise. I spent nearly ten minutes near the spaceship with three other Star Trek group members enjoying the lights and special effects that original 1960s technology provides us (which is basically blinky lights).

Los museos de Washington D. C. son tesoros. Se llaman así porque un científico británico del siglo XIX (James Smithson) recolectó muchas cosas, como obras de arte y objetos históricos y científicos. Estas cosas/pertenencias fueron una herencia para los Estados Unidos. No está claro por qué él dejó su herencia a un país que nunca visitó.

En todo caso, ahora hay más de doce museos y todos son propiedad del gobierno estadounidense. La entrada es gratuita y por acudir a museos como estos y poder disfrutar siempre he defendido que los museos deberían ser gratis.

Visité tres museos durante mi viaje a Washington D. C. Primero elegí un museo que no existe en Madrid, el Museo Nacional de Historia Estadounidense. Es famoso por la exhibición de los vestidos de las mujeres de los presidentes estadounidenses y además por una colección grande de objetos de Hollywood y de la vida popular. Me encanta ver ropa en museos ahora porque entiendo más sobre cómo fabrican las prendas.

La mejor parte fue una visita al Museo Nacional del Aire y el Espacio, donde vi una exposición sobre la exploración de la luna y la nave espacial original de la serie Star Trek. Pasamos casi diez minutos cerca de esta nave espacial con otros tres miembros de mi grupo de Star Trek, disfrutando del espectáculo de luces y los efectos especiales de la década de los 60.

Lisbon, again // Lisboa, otra vez

My best friend and her family recently visited Lisbon, and I took the opportunity to spend time with them while they were so close. I have vacationed in Lisbon in the past, so this time I didn't have any particular things I wanted to see. We took walks, drank coffee, and talked continuously. In other words, it was a great visit.

In the past, I had considered Portugal as a good place to live if Spain didn't work out for some reason. just like Spain, Portugal offers a non lucrative visa for people who don't need to work, and the cost of living, as well as the taxes, are lower than in spain. but every time I visit Lisbon, I don't really love it. It's nothing personal, it's simply that Spain fits me better. Therefore, I'll keep my fingers crossed that I don't have problems with my visa and can stay here.

The worst Caprese salad I´ve eaten in my life. The restaurant was uniformly terrible, so I didn´t ask them to replace it - I just went somewhere else and bought a falafel so I didn´t starve to death. // 

La peor ensalada caprese que he probado en mi vida. El restaurante era terrible de pies a cabeza, y por eso no pedí otra cosa para sustituirla, tan sólo busqué un bocadillo de falafel para no morir de hambre después.

Lisbon´s trams are super famous and Instagrammable, and I´ve never managed to take one, mostly because I spend all my time there sitting around drinking coffee and Port.  // Los tranvías de Lisboa son súper famosos e instagrameables, y nunca he conseguido coger uno. Probablemente porque dediqué todo mi tiempo a beber café y oporto.

Recientemente, mi mejor amiga y su familia vistaron Lisboa y aproveché esa oportunidad para visitarles, especialmente por su proximidad. Además, ya había pasado vacaciones en Lisboa y no tenía ganas de hacer nada en particular. Dimos paseos, tomamos cafés y hablamos sin pausa, en resumen, fue un viaje relajante.

Hace pocos años, pensaba que Portugal era un buen lugar para vivir, en caso de que en España no me fuera bien por alguna razón. Al igual que España, Portugal tiene un visado no lucrativo para personas jubiladas, y el costo de vida y los impuestos son más bajos que en España. Pero cada vez que la visito, no me siento en mi salsa. No es nada personal, es simplemente que España me hace sentir mejor. Así que espero seguir una larga estancia como ahora y jamás tener problemas con mi visado.

A birthday // Un cumpleaños

I know that not all cats enjoy catnip, but it turned out that Dash did. She and her brother took turns delightedly attacking her new gift, a catnip banana.  // Sabía que no a todos los gatos les gusta la hierba gatera, pero a Dash le gusta. Ella y su hermano se turnaban para atacar su regalo, el plátano de hierba gatera.

I just got back from a very quick trip to the US, where I visited a few of my friends in DC. The friends I stay with have a kitten named Dash.* While I was there, my friends realized that according to the vet, she was nearly a year old. I suggested we throw a birthday party for Dash, because I am always looking for an excuse to make cakes when I have access to a working oven and people who will help me eat all the sugary products I create. The family decided that Dash's guests would prefer chocolate cake, and we invited a few people over and had a party. (I suspect some of them also came to hang out with me.)

* When this kitten was rescued from a rainy gutter, my friends pulled her into the dry car and she climbed behind the dashboard to hide and stayed there for several days. Hence, the name Dash.

Acabo de regresar de un viaje corto a Estados Unidos, donde visité a mis amigos en Washington D. C. Me quedé con unos amigos que tienen una gatita que se llama Dash. Durante mi visita, mis amigos se dieron cuenta de que la gatita iba a cumplir un año – según el veterinario/al menos eso dijo el veterinario. Sugerí que hiciéramos una fiesta de cumpleaños para Dash. Siempre estoy buscando excusas para hacer bizcochos cuando tengo acceso a un horno que funciona , así hay personas que me ayudan a comer los dulces que hago y puedo reducir la ingesta. La familia decidió que los visitantes de Dash preferían bizcocho de chocolate. Así que invitamos a varios amigos e hicimos una fiesta. (Sospecho que algunos vinieron a verme también).

Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela has been famous for its pilgrims since the Middle Ages. My friend T and I visited a few weeks ago, because he found super cheap tickets - for only 35€, we could travel there and back by train, spending nine hours in the city and managing it in one very long day.

A lot of people have heard of the Camino de Santiago, which pilgrims traveled for weeks or months. In reality, there are perhaps ten different Caminos that passed through countries like Spain and France. All of them end at the Santiago Cathedral. Catholics believe that the bones of Santiago (i.e. St. James) were discovered at this location and that's why they built the cathedral. The bones were lost for a few centuries, but they were rediscovered in the 19th century. It appears that the cathedral and pilgrims continue to be a huge part of the city's economy.

It rains a lot in the region of Galicia, but we had luck because it only started to rain an hour before we needed to return. It's a beautiful city, with tiny streets and old buildings. The worst part was that I had to wake up at 6am to catch the train. This is something extremely rare for me, because my retired life in Spain normally lets me sleep in a lot later.

Santiago de Compostela es una ciudad famosa por sus peregrinos, desde la Edad Media hasta hoy. Mi amigo T y yo la visitamos hace algunas semanas, porque T encontró billetes baratos. Por sólo 35€, hicimos un viaje de tres horas en tren, pasamos nueve horas en la ciudad y regresamos el mismo día. 

Mucha gente ha oído hablar del Camino de Santiago, por ser el que los peregrinos recorren durante semanas o meses. En realidad, quizá haya un total de diez caminos diferentes que abarcan países como  España y  Francia entre otros.Todos ellos terminan en la Catedral de Santiago. Los católicos creen que los huesos de Santiago fueron descubiertos en este lugar, y por eso se construyó la catedral. Los huesos estuvieron perdidos durante algunos siglos, pero fueron encontrados de nuevo en el siglo XIX. Me parece que la catedral y los peregrinos siguen siendo un pilar fundamental de la economía de la ciudad.

Llueve muchísimo en la región de Galicia, pero tuvimos suerte de que solo empezara a llover una hora antes de que necesitáramos regresar. Es una ciudad preciosa, con muchas calles pequeñas. Lo peor del viaje fue que necesité levantarme a las 6 de la mañana, algo excepcional en mí, porque en mi vida de jubilada en España normalmente me despierto a las nueve.
