A garden of my own // Un jardín propio

My "garden" // Mi "jardin"

(Today I´m answering one of the quesions a blog reader asked me.)

A friend, H, asks, "Did you manage to create a vegetable garden on your porch/deck? Are there public spaces to grow food?"

Growing flowers, fruits, and vegetables has been an important hobby of mine in the past decade. I deiscovered that I loved planting, weeding, and harvesting, as well as learning how to preserve said harvest.

When I was looking for an apartment in Madrid, it was important to me that I get one with a terrace. I wanted to spend time in the fresh air, as well as grow a few plants. And in fact, I am able to grow flowers and herbs, but not vegetables, which require more light than the terrace receives.

I also don´t have a space in a community garden. In the US, similar to countries like England or Germany, community gardens are a thing, even if they are a thing with a long waiting list. You rent a space, near dozens of others where you can get your hands in the soil. Unfortunately, they are not so common in Spain. Surprisingly, there just happens to be one in my neighborhood, but it follows a model where everyone tends the plants together, and then they donate the harvest to the needy. I hope to help out with that in the future, but I think I´ll still miss choosing the plants, and getting to enjoy the fruits of my own labors.

Maybe with the vast number of farmers markets in Spanish cities and towns, they don't feel the need to do the DIY?
