Flashback to 2006// Recuerdo de 2006

In 1987, the Star Trek franchise started a new series called The Next Generation. The first time I saw it, I thought the costumes and makeup were super weird, but it wasn't long before I was watching every week. I didn't know anyone except my brother who liked the show. I felt a little weird, and sometimes lonely, watching science fiction.

About a decade later, when I began to study physics, I found my people. A friend would loan me Isaac Asimov novels, and my officemates regularly posted quotes from Star Wars and Star Trek on the office blackboard.

And that's why it didn't seem too strange to me when my friend T suggested that we attend the biggest Star Trek convention in the US, which took place in Las Vegas. A quick explanation for people who have never been to a convention like this one: you spend one, two or even three days in the convention center, filled with actors from the series who give talks and sell photos and signatures. There are lectures on stage fighting or the Klingon language, along with trivia contests and other games. In addition, at this time in Las Vegas there was a permanent Star Trek exhibition in a hotel where you could take a virtual trip on a spaceship and eat dinner at a restaurant reproduced from the series.

And so it was, that my friend t, my new boyfriend a, and I found ourselves in Las Vegas in August 2006. We bought mountains of souvenirs, enjoyed all the talks, and soaked in the atmosphere of nerds just like us.

En 1987, la franquicia Star Trek empezó una nueva serie, la cual se llama Star Trek: La nueva generación (Viaja a las estrellas: La nueva generación en Hispanoamérica). La primera vez que la vi, creí que los disfraces y el maquillaje eran raros, pero pronto empecé a verla cada semana. No conocía a nadie, excepto a mi hermano, a quien le gustaba esta serie. En consecuencia, me sentí un poco extraña y sola, ya que a mí me gustaba la ciencia ficción.

Sin embargo, casi una década más tarde, cuando empecé a estudiar física, encontré mi comunidad de aficionados a la ciencia ficción. Un amigo me prestó libros de Isaac Asimov, y mis compañeros de la oficina intercambiaron citas de Star Trek y Star Wars (La guerra de las galaxias).

Como resultado, no me pareció raro que mi amigo T. nos surgiera que vistaramos la conferencia de Star Trek más grande en EE. UU., que se lleva a cabo en Las Vegas. Una explicación simple para personas que nunca visitaron una conferencia como esta podría ser la siguiente: pasas uno, dos o tres días en un centro de convenciones. Hay muchos actores de la serie que dan charlas y venden fotos y firmas. Hay conferencias sobre temas como la lucha escénica o el idioma Klingon y también concursos de trivial u otros juegos. Además, en esta época en Las Vegas, había una exposición permanente de Star Trek en un hotel, donde se podía hacer un viaje en una nave espacial y comer en un ambiente que imita perfectamente el del restaurante de la serie.

Por consiguiente, mi amigo T, mi nuevo novio A y yo fuimos a Las Vegas en agosto de 2006. Compramos recuerdos, disfrutamos de las charlas de los actores, y nos empapamos de ese ambiente friki, sintiéndonos en familia.
